The deadly conflict between the two enduring rivals will be fought through non-state actors rather than a direct counterattack from Tel Aviv because neither side has a strategic goal for horizontal escalation, as demonstrated by Israel's and the US's successful defence of the Iranian missile attack last Saturday using its incredibly effective ballistic missile defence (BMD).
The Israeli strike on the Iranian-held annexe of the Damascus consulate resulted in the deaths of sixteen persons, including a senior commander of the Quds force. The Iranian attack was evident at least two days before to the actual firing of ballistic missiles and drones. The US, Israel, and Jordan were able to prepare the BMD against the impending strike due to the apparent movement of Iranian drones and missiles.
We should ask: Did any Iranian missiles or drones reach Israel? Well, it's unlikely. For example, an Iranian drone or missile would take at least nine hours to reach Israel, flying at 165 kilometers per hour. But Israel has really good defense systems like Iron Dome, Patriot, and David's Sling. So, even if some missiles did make it, these systems could shoot them down before they caused any harm.
